About this movie

The third film from the Academy Award and BAFTA-winning team behind 'Senna' and 'Amy', and producer Paul Martin, Diego Maradona is constructed from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage from Maradona's personal archive with the full support of the man himself. On the pitch, Diego Maradona was a genius. Off the pitch, he was treated like a God. The charismatic Argentine loved a fight against the odds and led Napoli to their first-ever title. It was the stuff of dreams. But there was a price... Diego could do as he pleased while performing miracles on the pitch but, as time passed, darker days closed in. In a city where the devil would have needed bodyguards, Maradona became bigger than God himself. This is the wild and unforgettable story of God-given talent, glory, despair and betrayal, of corruption and ultimately redemption.

Anyone that complaints or disputes this man's influence in our times is deluded to the facts of poverty, intensity and endurance to give the best of yourselves for the sake of family and football, his two loves. He was obviously naive throughout his life and didn't have the right sort of people around him to protect himself from the selfish types that took advantage of his talent & fame, leading him down the dark to his demise. Regardless of everything, when given the opportunity, the man proved himself time and time again for his nation and for the league teams he played for in his career. Pele had several other remarkable team mates in the Brazilian team at the same time. Messi & Ronaldo have had the advantage of the modern refined game in the civilised European leagues. It was not so easy to play in the 80-90's in rough uncivilised underbelly of Italy with constant focus of media 24/7 and to be regarded as a God, in football. No other player of today could have handled what this man experienced and overcome in his lifetime with a divine fighting spirit. A genius and an icon of our times and we have been privileged to have witnessed the beautiful game at the feet of such a sportsman.

Great movie about the chaotic life of one of the footballing greats. Helped me to understand why he was loved and loathed by so many fans.

Director, Asif Kapadia does it again. He has a special ability to understand where the essence of a story is. If you love documentaries, if you love football, you'll love this story of one the greatest and most iconic footballers of all time.
