This is a “Road Rules” style documentary where the journey is more important than the destination. The director, Julianna Brudek, finds a group of individuals representative of the LGBTQ+ community (transgender people of color and bisexual people are included) and the group drives across the country to a rally in memoriam to the victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre. During the voyage, the group discusses issues within the LGBTQ+ community and the cast gains a greater understanding of each other, disarming hate amongst themselves before they reach the demonstration. The personal stories are poignant and moving - Brudek is as good an editor as she is at casting. Loveable Harvey Fierstein is the narrator and it’s always nice to hear from him. This is a good documentary to watch with someone inside the community and bond over shared struggle, but it’s also an eye-opening documentary one can share with someone outside the community so they can better understand. The rating on this page is because of homophobic trolls (look at some of the other reviews). Don’t let them stop you from watching this fine story.

I can hardly believe this was filmed about events over 4 years ago. It feels like it could be about our lives today. The cast is very engaging and real. Their passion and conflict is on full display and the film makers tenacity to get them talking about their feelings pulls some great insights out of a very charged situation. Plus the guy who organized the rally is from my town and I never knew about it (I didn't live here at the time), so that was nice to learn about and learn how awesome your neighbors are.

Disarm Hate provides a 90 minute glimpse into how hate, discrimination, and violence rips through the heart of the LGBTQ+ community. Director Julianna Brudek does an amazing job in documenting 9 individuals as they celebrate lives of those lost too soon from violence as they head to the nation's capital to attend a rally to Disarm Hate. This is an excellent film and recommend watching to learn more about how hate directly impacts the LGBTQ+ community here in the United States.
