Emmet Devery, wealthy LA buildings financier, puzzles his young lawyer Marc Hill by his refusal to apply for government backing for housing projects. His only daughter Barbara, who is engaged to Marc, is also puzzled by his refusals to answer the questions concerning the mysterious telephone call he receives at home from time to time. Devery has been paying blackmail to a former business partner, Sam Baggett, who took the rap for a shady financial transaction and serve a prison term. A crisis in Sam's marriage coincides with Deverey's intention. Margie Baggett, a hard-faced blonde and fifteen years Sam's junior, married him for the GB10,000 that began the blackmailing. She has been two-timing Sam with Jeff Calder, a dapper used-car sales man. Margie puts the pressure on Sam to such a degree that he demands another GB 10,000 from Deverey.
