Po tom, čo sa v odľahlej časti oceánskeho dna záhadne potopí jadrová ponorka, je tím potápačov pracujúcich na prototype podmorskej ropnej plošiny nasadený americkým námorníctvom na záchrannú akciu. Keď hurikán preruší kontakt medzi hladinou a podmorskými hlbinami, posádka si začne všímať dôkazy o zvláštnej, pravdepodobne mimozemskej inteligencii. Zatiaľ čo sa náčelník Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) háda so svojou bývalou manželkou a šéfkou (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantoniová), veliteľ námorníctva začína byť v súvislosti so záhadným mimozemským životom čoraz paranoidnejší a vyhráža sa, že použije nájdenú jadrovú zbraň, aby všetko zničil.

Don't get scammed by Google. The original movie is 140 minutes. The Abyss Special Edition that was just released 12/2023 is 2 h 50 m. Google is selling this at full price and using the special edition cover (Bait and switch) to mislead people. Prime is the only place to get the right version. They are the only ones contracted to offer it. Sad part their version is UHD not true 4k and its 19.95.

Google is getting pretty incompetent when it comes to media sales — THE ABYSS is a Movies Anywhere title (20th Century Studios, owned by Disney) but the flag isn’t set despite MA including Google TV in the retailers list. Trying to sort this out with support led to an hour spent getting frustrated at the obviously AI support chatbot (which got shirty on being called out) and my decision to request a refund.

A unique film from James Cameron, the story is long and somewhat simple but still good and the movie itself is a masterclass in filmmaking. There is not another movie that equals the scale of the Abyss' underwater setting.
