Mr. Scott was right to release this "Director's Cut" of the film - so much was missing from the poorly edited theatrical release that it didn't make sense. With the edited scenes incorporated, you get a story, albeit a fictional account of the Third Crusade and Fall of Jerusalem in 1187, the characters are based on real persons and the plot is based on real events.
