Directed by Chris Wedge (the director of Ice Age), His direction really shines in this fun animated family film. Epic really lives up to it's title in a smart way, because when you shrink into the size of bug and there is a crisis that needs to be ended for everyone, the adventure and action does get epic. Think of those tiny characters as average size superheroes and the trees are like buildings in an eco-friendly way. The themes of this movie are familiar (protecting the forest and saving the ecosystem). This kind of moral theme has been found in an original eco-friendly animated movie, called "Ferngully: The last rainforest." And there are some references from "Honey, I shrunk the kids" (a father with glasses with a child that shrinked into the size of a locust grasshopper. Epic is a modern animated movie with unoriginality. And just like Ferngully, This film is distributed by Fox, so why do they have to make a movie with the same theme anyway? But the thing is, this is a good-vs-evil war-like story that clothes itself in environmental concerns, And the moral theme about protecting the forest is a highly important message that continues to inspire everyone. Another problem I have with this is some of the dialogue like joking about an uncles's death and saying that bats really do go in people's hairs, They don't. Anyway, The animation is absolutely first-rate, It has striking detail on any surface area like skin, leaves, feathers, wood, hair, and scales. It has vibrant colors too and the colors reflect the mood, on the good and nice side, the colors are bright, upbeat, and reflects our outside world, and on the bad and evil side, the colors are grim, dark, and somber. The animation has so much glossiness that really makes the look of the film shine, and the character designs are very well constructed and flawless. The cast is filled with nothing but extremely talented actors that voiced the characters. The film contains some of the best voice-acting that my ears have ever heard. There are some voice performances from some of the actors that made me laugh, like Josh Hutcherson, Aziz Ansari, Blake Anderson, and Chris 'O Dowd. The voice performances from others, have made me intrigued in a way that is amusing, like Amanda Seyfried, Collin Farrell, and Christophe Waltz. Almost all of the characters are very well utilized and wonderfully structured, each one is very useful in different ways and they really add a lot to the story. The screenplay is amazing, with eye-popping passages involving tones of vicious, snarling villains, humming birds flying in a team in a smooth way, the action sequences are swooping, fast, and will thrill any kid and any adult. The score by Danny Elfman is beautifully impressive (if not very memorable). The score fits the film perfectly from the tone, the look, the setting, and the mood. The instrumentation makes the music a pleasant listening experience. When Elfman describes epic music, he will create epic music in his own style, and it's incredible. The tone of the film has been done wonderfully, and the emotion of the tone is at the right place. The film has made me laugh several times, from the swift speedy movements of the fluid animation, the witty dialogue involving not needing any help and calling a villain ugly, the mildly sharp timing, and (again) some of the voice acting and tone. What I love about this movie is that this that, just like Pixar and Dreamworks, the movie is mature for the sensibilities of it's audience, But not too mature, otherwise the movie would be boring. Epic is truly not a timeless innovative classic, but I enjoyed this movie in its upbeat, innocent, and amusing way; it's a likable and beautiful spectacle that lives up to it's title. Recommended. three in a half out of five

The story is not mind blowing by any means, but that doesn't mean it's not good. I would consider this *almost* a Ferngully reboot, but not quite. It's a movie that you pickup bits and pieces you may have missed during the first viewing, if you watch it again. There are a few silly parts, but it is more serious themed and relationships are best understood by persons with 'life experience,' yet still entertaining for the younger kids.

Honestly extremely disappointing like why would you even name this movie epic with a lowercase e. First of all its about grass people, and the voice acting just gets on the nerves. Not worth the money and time, the only reason it got good ratings from rotten tomatoes, is because it's about the environment and "being politically correct". However if you like movies about slugs and lame grass people go ahead.
