Expectation: a lively and whimsical space adventure that the whole family will enjoy. Reality: an unsophisticated and unpretentious enterprise that provides absolute goofiness. Every single character is paper-thin and one dimensional with a little bit of support, but the main villain (General Shanker) has some depth, But as a character, General Shanker is just plain. he is just this sadistic and malevolent antagonist with very little personality; he just doesn't have any robust punch to his characterization. The only character that stood head and shoulders above the rest is Scorch, because he is a lively, zany character with an adventurous spirit and has a lot of brawny strength. He is also really funny with 1 or a few more one-liners. Speaking of funny, the comedy (mostly, the slapstick gags) is so uninspired, predictably unfunny, and some are just ridiculous. Okay, the character that did made me laugh the most is definitely Scorch. Most of the dialogue is trite, very corny, and preposterous. The idea of casting the voice actors is just bringing in the actors that did not interest me at all and I knew nothing about them, but there are two actors in the cast that did engross me a lot: Brendan Fraser (a whimsical, amusing, and melodramatic adventure star), who voices one of the main protagonists, and William Shatner (an amusing actor who voiced Kazar the villainous wildebeest from "the wild" and Ozzie the father opposum from "over the hedge.") who voices the main antagonist. Brendan Fraser's voice performance is absolutely quintessential as Scorch; he is very entertaining to listen to, as he delivers this exuberant and adventurous material to his character. William Shatner makes his villain an evil, prissy bad guy, but his voice performance does not have any punch or spiciness to his performance. The animation is very well-done with glossy surfaces, bright, upbeat colors, eye-catching detail, and the characters move with smooth fluidity, But that is just all I can say about the animation, because it just looks kind of plain but does look cute from time to time. I was expecting the score to be this rich and bold orchestral adventure score for a family friendly animated space adventure, and the score is composed by Aaron Zigman (the composer of Bridge to Terabithia). Sadly, even the score does not have any punch, flavor, or spiciness to capture my ears attention or be rich and lush, and quite often, the score goes from rock, to jazz, to electronic. At least the score is this energetic sound that fits well with the animation genre and sometimes it is orchestral in some elements. In the end, I was really disappointed in this film, and just by watching this film, I can see that this will not be recommended to families. Kids and adults deserve smarter, better, more sophisticated, and more entertaining than this. There are better family movies out there. Skip it.

I actually enjoyed this movie, but at the same time, it's not great. It's writing needed some work. But, as someone who's seen a lot of scifi movies, i thought the spoofs in it are awesome. I mean, it has William Shatner as the war monger tyrant in charge of area 51, dating an alien who really only likes him for his wig. It's not emmy material, but if your a scifi fan, the parody ought to entertain you
