Maribel Matthews (Marjorie Main), mayor of Rim Rock, and her boyfriend, Billy Caswell (Percy Kilbride), must find a runner to win the town's yearly footrace with neighboring Big Bend. If they don't, lost bets could sink the town. They settle on reluctant traveling salesman Wilbur McMurty (Donald O'Connor), who they kidnap and force to race. But once he meets and becomes enamored with Maribel's daughter, Libby (Penny Edwards), McMurty willingly carries the town's hopes on his shoulders.
