Fireman Smokey Joe Grant (Joe E. Brown) invents a fire-extinguishing bomb he believes will change firefighting, yet is torn between waiting for a new fire to test it and playing baseball for his town's team. Convinced by the team to pitch, Joe is then frustrated when he misses a major fire. A baseball scout watching the game offers Joe a contract, but he refuses -- until his fiancée, Sally Toby (Evalyn Knapp), persuades him that he'll be able to afford to test his bomb if he accepts.
