Rebellious, 14-year-old Sandy (Wood--The Lord of the Rings films) is having trouble dealing with his parents' recent divorce. Hoping that a change of scenery will do him good, they send Sandy to spend the summer with his aging hippie Uncle Porter (Hogan--Crocodile Dundee films) on Florida's Coral Key island. But nothing seems to help the boy until he saves the life of a dolphin named Flipper from a local charter boat captain. Sandy and Flipper develop a deep bond of friendship and loyalty, and Flipper helps Sandy stop the charter boat captain from dumping toxic waste into the waters of Coral Key.
