This is the story of Dick and Jane-as in the first-grade primer. Only our principals (George Segal and Jane Fonda) have grown up and married. They have an 11-year-old son named Billy, a dog named Spot, a fine house in the suburbs and a mailbox crammed with bills. When Dick's boss Charlie (Ed McMahon) lays him off from his aerospace engineer job, the family is forced to sacrifice. Jane tries to get a job-unsuccessfully. Dick tries to collect unemployment-unsuccessfully. Just as creditors start becoming pushy, Dick and Jane find themselves in the right place-a loan company-at the right time-during a robbery.
