It was an okay sci-fi action movie and the plot wasn't really that sound. The movie sort of wants to go into how machine bodies with human brains can impact an individual's identity but then instead of delving further into this decides to tell us the tale of the criminals who made this possible in unethical ways and how they were killed by our protagonist. All the while we're being bombarded with references to source content of the movie which is the comic book and the animation movie in a reckless manner. A big problem in the story was that it really wanted to cover interesting concepts from the original content however due to time constraints and trying to reflect on too many things the movie ends up not delivering enough depth. They had some good ideas regarding revealing the backstories for Motoko and how Batou got his eyes replaced which were never mentioned in the original material. These substories were sort of good however I would have preferred they had a stronger main plot going on. I was yearning for a satisfactory conflict in the movie and unfortunately this never came.

A good example of how to turn a deep story with complex characters into a shallow plot with black&white, simplistic characters. It's a typical "let's beat the bad guy" Hollywood type of movie with some references to the original series. All in all, a mediocre experience.

The story is easier to understand than the 1995 anime story, but overall the story is weaker compared to the anime. The fight scene with the spider tank has less quality than the anime version. Because this is a remake 22 years after the anime, it is missing many of the "this is fascinating" moments. The last "I give my consent" feels absurd because it concerns a different subject than the previous consents. Kuze, project 2571, is trivially portrayed as a previous human brain implantation attempt, while in the anime project 2501 is a consciousness resulting from artificial intelligence experiments and from system self-organization, which is a much more interesting concept compared to implanting a brain into an artificial body.
