When you watched Godzilla (2014), did you feel at any point "You know I paid to see a Godzilla movie, what's with all the human drama?" This is worse. Not only are there a number of human based plot threads and characters, the writing for them is horrendous. The writing telling you why and how the monsters are about to battle? Horrendous, where they do explain or make any attempt to develop the myriad of plot threads, the coherence and level of interest is, at the very best, tenuous. Even if you want to watch this just to see 2 kaiju battle it out, they keep cutting back to the humans. (SPOILERS) (SPOILERS) (SPOILERS) (SPOILERS) (SPOILERS) (SPOILERS) (SPOILERS) (SPOILERS) (LAST CHANCE...) The native people on Skull Island? Oh they died off screen before the movie. The giant dome Kong is enclosed in? Built off screen before the movie started. Godzilla is now "attacking humanity"? That's off screen and before the movie started. Later it's pointed out that Godzilla was chasing down the PARTS for Mechagodzilla, which raises questions, but as Godzilla enters Hong Kong where they are testing Mechagodzilla, Godzilla Classic gets distracted by Kong and his axe who is MILES AWAY. How to get to the "Hollow Earth"? Fall down this hole, go through a worm-hole... thing... and don't splat when the gravity reverses. How do you get out? Oh just fly up the hole Godzilla made by digging down. No wormhole, nadda Every character has access to the instant learning of The Matrix movies and has their character either paper thin or turning on a dime. Eiza González' character arch and motivation in particular cruelly simplistic Julian Dennison's character suddenly has (or acts at) having "hacking" skills and pivots the track of the movie with something that doesn't make sense AND is the equivalent of shooting the pin pad to open the door. Alexander Skarsgard, a cartographer and geologist, suddenly knows how to rewire the never before made engine to act as a defibrillator, and uses it to "revive" King Kong, not from a stopped heart, but a crushed chest, lacerations across the torso and a dislocated arm. Even the visuals are off. Yes, they are very pretty and I could not do better (or maybe I could, given the work hours put into this movie), but some of the shots look like bad early 2000's CGI, and some of the shots have severe problems. We're not talking small focus slips or something, the position of the sun changes constantly (it was annoying in Kong and it's annoying now). Even Mechagodzilla's design is terrible, looking more like a scaled back Michael Bay era transformer, and I honestly laughed out loud when I saw the set design for Mechagodzilla's "control room". It's not a bad movie, (Kaylee Hottle acted well despite what she had to work with and was the second best part of the film apart from the titular characters) and I had my expectations set low because I was pretty hyped after having just watched Godzilla and Godzilla KOTM (both with their own "eck" moments), but this was just so incredibly disappointing.

Kong skull islands remains my favorite, with such great colors, set pieces, cast, just good stuff. The first godzilla 2014 would be my second if Bryan Cranston was the lead. That was that films largest problem besides holding back on action and money shots. I almost fell asleep during king of the monsters. This is easily better than that and more entertaining that 2014. You get what you paid for here and there are lots of great moments and big destruction. Forget the humans and sit back, enjoy

Everything beside the monster fights is just awful and hard to watch. Feels even worse because you're only watching for the fights so everything else even had it been good would still feel in the way. But it wasn't good. Fights were fun. Cg when isolated by itself was good. Anytime it was mixed with reality however it stands out really badly. Watchable if you like giant monsters fighting.
