This is a movie that is designed to be thought provoking. Art imitates life. There are so many gone girl type characters in everyday life. Maybe not to the extent of murder but certainly the act of people putting on a good face for the public to hide evil and/or malicious intentions. The book/movie is not only a study of an extremely codependent couple who completely dupe the public, it's also a mirror being held up to society reflecting our impulse to scream GUILTY/INNOCENT/VICTIM-sometimes far too quickly

How people find this to be entertaining is a real sign of the times. Nothing about it is compelling. The police are ridiculous. The whole premise is preposterous. The tail end of the movie is laughable. And logic is no-where to be found from start to finish. I'd be happy to elaborate on the plethora of instances where the actors and director filled whole minutes of film with cognitive horse crap, but I don't want to recite the entire script from line one.

Gone Girl takes the fantasy of marrying a killer/sociopath oft explored by our media and gives it a fresh new angle. Rosamund Pike's hero is a woman who has felt superior to and controlled those around her for her entire life. In Affleck, Pike found a man whom she was willing to make a total commitment to. As the story goes, after time, the magic began to fade for Affleck but Pike, has remained totally committed to her version of Affleck which he has started to let slip. Rather than endure his cheating and lies, she decides to destroy him by framing him for her murder. Traditionally, when the crazy and often female partner goes off the reservation like this in a movie they are either killed or arrested. Instead this film ends with her having totally won. She has managed to get a leash on Affleck via artificially inseminating herself with his sperm and now she will have the marriage she wanted to the man she fell in love with... And they lived happily ever after? Pike's character is Sharon Stone from Basic Instinct but totally engrossed by the cult of domesticity and the feeling that marriage is something sacred that can never be broken.
