Gretel & Hansel is a retelling of the old tale. It's beautifully filmed with great imagery and style (think The Cook, The Thief, is Wife and her Lover). While it's meant to be a scary story of caution , this one is not. It's too beautiful to pull it off. The film spoon feeds you the story line in the form of constant narrations and the dialogue is quite week. Hansel is too young to pull off his script and Alice Krige is wasted frankly. You don't build sympathy for any of the characters and it is hard to care what happens to them in the end.

Overall not scary more enchantingly dark, a new spin on a favourite fairy tale with Gretel being the main protagonist. Although the movie is a little slow it definitely keeps you locked in wondering where it is heading which is surprising. As for the negatives although the horror elements were strategically subtle, for me it/there just wasn't enough. It sets a really grim and dark path to be a great horror movie by plot and cinematography but just doesn't quite get there.
