A filmről

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers, was wounded by a grenade, and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I really did not like this movie. It had a great story of heroism to work with, but it was just a bad movie. It felt like an Arnold movie with Japanese soldiers being shot up with endless clips from Vincent Vaughn. The editing seemed very awkward, too. The acting was so poor. Skip this and just watch Saving Private Ryan again. This movie seems to glorify violence over what the main character who this is based on wanted. Vincent Vaughn, on a blanket being pulled by a character who played awkward Spiderman, shooting lots of Japanese soldiers who appeared too dumb to duck behind anything. Skip it.

It's a good movie, great story told effectively. There's plenty of action, once that part of the movie gets going (you get to know the characters first), but it's not the same gritty realism of savings private Ryan. It's more theatrical which will have those who want true realism rolling their eyes now and then. Certainly good entertainment. Worth watching.

The action shots on the battle field are really incredible. It's a film you need to see in big screen to appreciate the beauty, gory as it may be at times. Gibson, for all his faults, is a great director. What's really interesting is that they had to hold back from including too many of the heroic deeds Doss actually performed on the field as it would have come across as Hollywood embellishing his story making it hard for people to believe.
