Steve McQueen delivers a powerful, gripping performance as a defiant loner whose skills as a soldier make him invaluable to his struggling platoon. In the heat of battle during World War II, McQueen and his fellow soldiers find themselves severely outnumbered as they hold off a Nazi advance along the Siegfried Line in France. Using only their ingenuity and bravery, they must bluff the Germans in order to buy some time...and save their lives. Don Siegel directs the explosive action led by an all-star cast, including Bobby Darin, Fess Parker, Harry Guardino, James Coburn, Nick Adams and Bob Newhart. If they can fool the enemy long enough for reinforcements to arrive, victory is theirs.

Its a classic and early Steve McQueen movie, with lots of character actors that would go on to have their own series, like Fess Parker (Daniel Boone & Davy Crockett roles), Nick Adams (The Rebel), James Coburn ( Flint series and Magnificent 7), Bob Newhart ( Newhart / Librarian ). Gritty action picture that doesn't glorify war but does reflect what line soldiers would've experienced had to endure. I suspect this is the type of movie that my Uncle would've avoided watching as he once mentioned that after his experiences in the Second World War, he never watched war movies, it brought back too much memories of being in battle and losing friends.

I didn't expect to like Hell is for Heroes. I expected a shoot em up propaganda film. To my surprise and enjoyment this film is the opposite.

A non glorified depiction of the WW2 and instills fear of what trench warfare was all about. Welcome to the Siegfried Line!
