From visionary writer/director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II, The Devil's Backbone) comes Hellboy, a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola's popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt), who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that they protect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.

A movie that embraces it's unusual yet lovable main character with big open arms, a great eye for constantly amazing visuals and a detailed, if not slightly convoluted, plot. What keeps it afloat is how well we still remain connected to the characters and never forget he's not a monster or beast of the apocalypse; he's a normal guy who just happens to have a big right hand, a tail and likes cats. It's all of those elements combined that make this one rhe Crown Jewel of lesser known superhero movies.

A Little more than (1) ★, but not a full (2) ★★ stars… if it ain't got Ron Perlman ot ain't the Real Hellboy personality !! Not meaning this is bad or poorly doin' it just Missing that "™" (Trade Mark) which are in HB 1 & 2!? Viewed once on big-screen but no purchase or rent, now or later. My grandson Chance and I , always love to watch BOTH hell boys whenever he comes to visit. Its one of our favorites !!!
