About this movie

The Graham family starts to unravel following the death of their reclusive grandmother. Even after she's gone, the matriarch still casts a dark shadow over the family, especially her loner teenage granddaughter, Charlie, whom she always had an unusual fascination with. As an overwhelming terror takes over their household, their peaceful existence is ripped apart, forcing their mother to explore a darker realm in order to escape the unfortunate fate they've inherited.

The first quarter was just ok then it went rapidly downhill from there. Totally weird plot, over-acting galore, and a poor ending. If you must watch it, wait till it's out on a free to air channel and only then if you've got nothing better to do. Terrible.

For those who didn't like the ending and thought it out of place to the rest of the film. The director is into the occult, so while the rest of the film incorporates elements of actual witchcraft mixed with horror, the ending is like a fantasy fulfillment. Rejecting and mocking you know who is par for course. Evil knows it has an enemy.

First half was very good, as is Toni Collette. Second half is average horror fare, with some interesting references which were enjoyable but I just didn't feel the tension. The protagonist (human/demon) stops being frightening about half way through..This never explores the psychology of grief only shows it being played out unconvincingly and inspiringly. This film is definitely worth a watch a film with substance to get the brain cogs ticking over and the google searches going for the curiously minded but comparisons to "The Witch" aren't relevant (the latter is a far better film if you want to watch a film utterly disturbing and yet still bone chillingly relevant). Hopefully Midsommer is a step up.
