A lovable Seaver family has three pets; an American Bulldog named Chance, a Golden Retriever named Shadow, and a Himalayan Cat named Sassy. One day, the family drops off the three pets to a rancher named Kate (Jean Smart) so she can take care of them, because the family moves to San Fransisco because Bob (the father played by Robert Hays) has a job there. Now, it is up to the three pets to go on a perilous trek to go all the way back home and find their family owners. Along the way, they help each other in frantic situations, learn lessons, and encounter woodland creatures; two adolescent black bears, a full grown grizzly bear who is more bold than black bears, a porcupine, a skunk, and a dangerous encounter with a vicious mountain lion or cougar. I was astonished on how talented Duwayne Dunham (the director) was for this appealing enterprise; He was great at knowing how to make the emotional/entertainment value very dynamic as he coaches the cast to deliver energetic material that feels real and dramatic. He has got his hands full with a live cast of actors (human or creature), and he did a wonderful job working with the entire cast. He also structured the craftsmanship too; there are moments where the camera plays as the dog's eyes, the screenplay was structured smartly in terms of the effective timing, how it was framed and cut with some help of the editor Johnathon P. Shaw who did a nice job on the editing. The movie has a lot of heart because of it's themes about family and resilience, and it stresses messages about loyalty and compassion. There is a lot more to the charm of this movie: this reminded me of "The Land Before Time," because it is a family friendly animal movie where the animals go on a long dramatic trek avoiding danger and describing what they see or what has happened from an animal's perspective because of the written dialogue that is clever and whimsical. I find the comedy in this movie hilarious; The jokes are witty with nothing immature and there is nothing that will insult a child's intelligence, let's not forget how the tone was perfectly set as well. Thanks to the animal trainers, the cast of animal actors here were the major superstars; They have followed the script well and they know how to they should act in different scenes. The music score by Bruce Broughton was as dynamic and whimsical as the movie itself, as it enhances each and very scene with hugely agreeable results. The three animals protagonists were anthropomorphic due to the fact that the voices for these three were dubbed over by a pitch-perfect cast that did such a brilliant job with their voice-acting. Chance (Michael J. Fox) is a cheeky and energetic American Bulldog that gets into some mischief. Michael J. Fox was hysterical as Chance, and most of his voice acting is hilarious. Shadow (Don Ameche) is a no-nonsense and wise Golden Retriever. Sassy (Sally Field) is a Himalayan cat with a name that suits her personality correctly; she's arrogant and really is sassy. Not to mention that Sally Field was amusing as Sassy the cat. The Seaver family (especially the kids) have a lovable attachment to their pets. Most of the human characters have a huge careful heart. Some of them are overzealous in a cold manner, like the dog catchers. I really felt for all of the characters in scenes that are heart-breaking and very sad, especially the likable trio of pets. Chance is the main protagonist who has been an orphan and has been in the pound which makes him totally unhappy. In conclusion: dynamic, whimsical, moving; There is a whole lot to say about this anthropomorphic animal odyssey, because it is a wonderous triumph! Highly Recommended!
