About this movie

Reeling from a traumatic tour of duty in Afghanistan, Joey, an ex-Special Forces soldier, returns to London to face another kind of war: life on the streets as a damaged, homeless veteran. In an attempt to rehabilitate himself, Joey assumes another man's identity and seeks the aid of Sister Cristina, a young nun who works at an inner-city parish. But Joey's expert training as a soldier marks him as a valuable asset, and he soon finds himself caught in the dark web of London's criminal underworld. Struggling to keep hold of his integrity, Joey offers his profits to those who need it most. But when he learns his missing girlfriend was brutally murdered by a ruthless kingpin, he risks everything for bloody revenge, hurtling down a deadly path that promises to destroy him completely... or be his last and only hope at redemption.

Stratham pulls of this one very well demonstrating his real skills as a solid actor that can tackle complex character drama as well as simple action. The story, if unlikely, is actually realistic, most the subplots in ring true for London. The action is hard yet the ending fairly subdued, which is good as any more than that would have ruined the movies gritty edge. (Let's get real; cars exploding, hand-to-hand slaughter, and gun battles in major cities just don't happen.)

Not a standard statham movie, this is a good thing. It not a no-brainer action film but a darker grittier take on the harsh modern urban experience. Slower but more thoughtful and convincing than most of his stuff. This is the film he shudda been making from the start.

I went looking for action and found drama and I was not disappointed. I'm no expert but I know what I like. Would have given five stars for more action. A good time had when all said and done.
