About this movie

Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, Tonya is a dark comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous and poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie's I, Tonya is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked—and checkered—glory. - ( Original Title - I, Tonya )

I don't really care what achievements she is known for what she did was so brutal and so disrespectful that she deserved to get banned for life from professional figure skating. I had a severe injury on my right kneecap that still after 20 years pains me quite a bit off and on and I have involuntary twitches that occurs. Yeah it's true that this movie is a comedy just based on the horrible monster behind it.

Well, talk about a sleeper. The way this movie was promoted, I thought it was going to be a comedy, a satirical take on the events and people in question. Suffice it to say, not so much. A first rate movie with some of the best acting I've seen lately, from the lovely Margot Robbie, who delivered a knock-out performance, to Alison Janney, always tremendous but deserving of an award for this one. The one caveat is that since the story as portrayed was compiled from a series of interviews with the notably unreliable persons involved, we can't know how much of what didn't happen in front of the media was accurate. Nonetheless, a winner.

Being a native Portlander, knowing the area where Tonya lives, and being present during this scandal, made me weep for her. I also spent tie on the ice - but at the other end with the hockey players. Her story is more like that of hockey players - not the affluent figure skaters. No one should have to grow up in this kind of home, or suffer this sort of abuse - but she did. This film does not answer the question of her part in how the Kerrigan whack job was pulled off. This has always been a subject of debate. But it certainly lays open the back story and how hard it was for her to survive in a different world than the one she grew up in. Ultimately, she did not make it - but she tried.
