Very relevant to all music today, not just jazz. Any music that is wanting to go somewhere, any music that is looking to find a place within a musical lineage, this film has insightful commentary on that dynamic. Icons Among Us makes an important statement in this time of transition — this time when a shift toward an "and" mindset (as opposed to an "or" mindset) is taking deeper root in music culture, even the culture at large. The musicians interviewed here are both legends and young up and comers charting their own way. They espouse an exciting perspective — that a musician can love and honor the great musicians of the past while recognizing that to truly follow in their footsteps is not to play the same music they played, but to have the same spirit they had — the spirit of innovation and exploration.
