A poignant film that dives into World War II from the point of view of the Japanese common-folk. This is a poetic response to Grave of the Fireflies in my opinion. I found myself lost in the fresh, unique perspective that the film offers. If you're willing to stomach a film that takes its time to simmer- as opposed to rushing through its material to get through the action- then this film is definitely worth your time. This film is also worth your time if you like WWII films in general. And you might also learn something about late 30's / early 40's Japanese culture during the screening, as I did.

It's a very poignant anime film set in Hiroshima, Japan, during the Pacific War and after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Despite the cartoonish art style, there's a reason this film is rated PG-13. It tackles mature subject matters since it is a wartime anime film in Japan. The second half can be very upsetting to younger viewers. Despite this, it's a laid-back film compared to other emotionally and gut-wrenching Japanese wartime anime films.
