Gemini Ganesan is the son of Balaiah, a rich landlord. Savithri is the daughter of a poor peasant who works for Balaiah. Gemini Ganesan and Savithri fall in love. Gemini persuades her and they marry secretly. Gemini goes abroad for higher education. But Balaiah disapproves Gemini-Savithri marriage. So he forces Savithri to forget Gemini and Savithri lives with her father. She begets a son but her father lies to her that the baby died and leaves baby in an orphanage. Savithri meets Gemini in a wrong place and Gemini suspects her character. Meanwhile her son Master Kamal Hassan grows up as a bright student in the orphanage. Fate brings Gemini, Savithri and Kamal Hassan together. Whether they reunite as a family or not is the rest of the narration.
