Early 1900s. Five children grow up together to become young adults in a seemingly perfect middle-American town, but they are haunted by carefully hidden mental illness--which erupts violently: One of the friends is murdered by her father, the town psychiatrist, when he discovers she is pregnant; and a vindictive surgeon unnecessarily amputates the legs of a dashing young playboy (Reagan) who had dated his daughter.
