Not a bad film but not great never really gets to any heights emotionally or comically. Saoirse Ronan is excellent for sure, deserves the accolades she gets for this but sadly lacking in any other real highlights. Is it partly autobiographical? It could be, feels like it almost has something to say but never really goes there & when it tries feels too conceited. Lines like "Don't be republican" felt out of place both in the movie and from the lead role of Lady Bird. I can appreciate an ode to a hometown but need it be so transparent?

An awkward tale, vulnerable and tenacious, of "Ladybird" emerging from the crucible of birth family life. Depicted with a tender humour, fragility, strength and warmth. I found this a lovely telling.. Forward and unpretentious, even though perhaps during certain transitions, a tad glib. That could of course be explained as editing concerns for a general audiences emotional stamina.
