Beautifully filmed with slow burning tension, I moved from feeling great pity for Katherine - who was clearly being abused by her husband and father-in-law, to becoming increasingly aware of her off-handed cruelty to Anna and then wondering why Sebastian was being such a creep about the little boy being around. I also wondered about the symbolism of the cat, as it finally moved to sit at the table...so I read a synopsis of the story this film is based on (no it's not Shakespeare's Macbeth obviously, it's a 19th century Russian short story) and honestly wondered why they didn't keep the original ending. I think the film would have been better if it had been 20 minutes longer and revealed the true character of "Sebastian" instead of making Katherine look utterly evil.

Not your typical Hollywoods movie. The lower ratings makes me believe that people had no clue what they're walking into. This movie plays out like a play. The lead, played by Florence Pugh, gives a fantastic breakout performance. The movie is comparable to Unfaithful, except in the 19th Century.

This is a searing dramatization of the life of a English provincial woman with no love in her life after a dowry marriage. Florence Pugh is a pugnation manipulator who winds her way from ingenue in quick succession. This a great performance piece for Pugh who will star in the upcoming Marvel's Black Widow in May 2020.
