Tras la pérdida de su hijo, el sheriff ya retirado George Blackledge (Kevin Costner) y su mujer Margaret (Diane Lane) dejan su rancho en Montana para recuperar a su nieto, que está con la poderosa familia Weboy, ya que su nuera se ha vuelto a casar. La matriarca Blanche Weboy, tras descubrir las intenciones de los Blackledge, decide hacer todo lo posible para impedir que el niño regrese con sus abuelos.
