Dopo la morte del figlio, lo sceriffo in pensione George Blackledge (Costner) e la moglie Margaret (Lane) lasciano la propria fattoria in Montana per recuperare il giovane nipote dalla custodia di una pericolosa famiglia che vive fuori dagli schemi in Dakota ed è guidata dalla matriarca Blanche Weboy.
