Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on their own terms – is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

I have read Little Women countless times and have read all of Alcott's books. This was awful. It didn't reflect the voice of the author at all, the characters were underdeveloped and so boring. It was back and forth so you couldn't attach to the characters at all. Meg and Beth were barely a part of the movie. I kept wondering if it would ever end. The movie is very pretty...the only positive thing I can say.

I thought the movie was fine, and the roles were well cast and excellently performed. However, I didn't like the creative decision to do time skips back and forth. The transitions between the times were confusing for most of the movie. The story also wasn't well paced. So, not a great adaptation. Timothee Chalamet stole the scene every time he was on screen, so he alone bumped this movie from 2 stars to 3.

I never had a real love for Little Women. I attempted to read the book and always felt something was missing. I've seen many renditions of the classic but none caught my attention as intensely as this did. This film shares a new outlook to growing up, each sister maturing differently. My favorite character will always have to be Amy. Florence Pugh perfectly played the character's maturity through the story. Overall each actress was amazing in telling the story of how they came into the world.
