About this movie

Adapted from Flaubert’s classic novel, Madame Bovary tells the tragic story of Emma, a young beauty who impulsively marries a small-town doctor to leave her father’s pig farm behind. But after being introduced to the glamorous world of high society, she soon becomes bored with her stodgy mate and seeks excitement and status outside the bonds of marriage. This sumptuous period drama features a superb cast including Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Paul Giamatti (Sideways) and Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower). Flaubert’s classic novel comes to life.

If you have read Emma Bovary then you would know this is not a love story, it is not a story about passion, it is the portrait of a young a naive middle class woman who is disappointed by the banality of her marriage and life in a small provincial town. She is a self-centred brat with no insight into her life and others. Her religious education has not equipped her mentally nor intellectually for real life and real relationships. She will drive her husband to bankruptcy and herself to madness. This movie is NOT an accurate representation of what Flaubert's book is about.
