Mary Magdalene, is conceived to be an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to the capital city of Jerusalem.

Elements of greatness, but not enough. Mary was undoubtedly a great disciple, but this is a bit of a disappointment. Joaquin Phoenix was miscast -- 10 years too old and playing it like Jesus is a little bit crazy, rather than someone who's one with God. Not a waste of time but could've been better. Not the "dullest story ever told" as there is defintely something enigmatic about the story.

It is some weird version of the gospels. Just a frustrating, abstract movie with vague similarity of the true story. Jesus is some older, super serious dude and very few parts of the movie follow the true theme. If l could give it a half l would

Not the worst biblical movie made by a long shot ( eg Noah ), but there were bits of it that just didn't sit well, and were slightly blasphemous. But I liked bits of this movie, and think that it did give good insight that is not common teaching. I think Olive Grove7 has nailed a part of the weirdness of it........
