Balian, a blacksmith who inherits the title of his illegitimate father, Godfrey of Ibelin, becomes a key player in the defense of Jerusalem when it is attacked by Saladin, during the time of the Crusades - that world-shaping 200-year collision between Europe and the East.

Ratings and reviews

Mr. Scott was right to release this "Director's Cut" of the film - so much was missing from the poorly edited theatrical release that it didn't make sense. With the edited scenes incorporated, you get a story, albeit a fictional account of the Third Crusade and Fall of Jerusalem in 1187, the characters are based on real persons and the plot is based on real events.
