I love Michael Shannon and his film choice most of the time. Although, with Midnight Special it seem to leave you incomplete, unable to actually long for something that never was. The concept for the film felt like a brillant buzzing overnight brainstorm which no one actually wrote down. Characters were incomplete, Backstory was discounted and the whole idea was just pointless! (It fizzled out once the screenplay ever began.)

This movie seemed to think it was dramatic and thought-provoking and I was carried along with that for the first half. At that point it just became a bit of a mess with everyone looking for someone and no one in the audience really understanding why. Then once the big reveal came it was very unsatisfying. It felt like the writers got tired and finished their paper with 'very, very, very, very...' to get the appropriate length in.

I'm a Michael Shannon fan and he was great in his scenes, but no charachter development and a directionless script left this movie flailing to the very end at witch you have no f#@king idea what happened except to take what you watched and thread out in your head possibly what the end was about - leaves you guessing in a bad way. Or its a str8 rip off of Tomorrowland.
