On September 23, 1994, Miles Hargrove's father was kidnapped outside their home in Cali, Colombia by the armed separatist group known as the FARC. Miles, his brother Geddie, and their mom Susan received a ransom letter demanding six million US dollars or Tom would face execution. Neither his employers nor the Colombian government negotiated with terrorists, so it fell to the Hargrove family themselves to initiate talks with Tom's captors. To cope with the long and difficult negotiations, Miles kept a Video8 diary of the surreal events that unfolded as he and his family fought to free his father. 25 years later, he revisited the footage to turn his diary into a documentary chronicling his family's incredible story.
