Cole Young, un luchador de la MMA habituado a recibir palizas a cambio de dinero, desconoce su legado e ignora por qué el emperador de Outworld, Shang Tsung, ha enviado tras él a su mejor guerrero, el criomante Sub-Zero. Al temer por la seguridad de su familia, Cole acude en busca de Sonya Blade por indicación de Jax, un comandante de las fuerzas especiales que porta la misma marca dragontina con la que nació Cole. No tardará en llegar al templo de Lord Raiden, dios anciano y protector de Earthrealm, quien ofrece refugio a todos los portadores de la marca. Allí, Cole entrenará con los guerreros Liu Kang y Kung Lao y el mercenario Kano, y se preparará para enfrentarse junto con los campeones más notables de la Tierra contra los enemigos de Outworld en una batalla por el universo. Sin embargo, ¿logrará Cole desatar su arcana (el inmenso poder que reside en su alma), salvar a su familia y detener a Outworld de una vez por todas?

Understand that the Mortal Kombat universe of games spans 11 now. The lore is expansive and vast in relation to all the characters story arcs. This movie works within it magnificently, Life and death fights with all the over-the-top action combined. Some may say it does not follow the lore of the games or why a character was added, however most of this argument can be down to the first 3 games based around the tournament event and the characters in them. If you go past this and expand to the full 11 games set it fits superbly. New characters, moves and story changes for the film version all work well. Mortal Kombat with all its gore and randomness in 110 minutes. Bring on the sequel, perhaps with a tournament in that one now that the narrative explanations such as character powers have been setup.
