My father fled the Cultural Revolution in 1966. After risking his life to get to America, he started a family in Boston. When his restaurant went bankrupt and my mom got sick, he began to feel like he'd failed at the American Dream. A story of migration is passed down from father to son, as we retrace the precarious steps he took in search of a better life. Ultimately asking the question, what does it mean to be both Chinese and American?

I cried when I watched this. My family is of Toisan descent. For me this was a small return to what could have been home for me and really seeing someone go through what I eventually want to do (a return to the motherland) really brought out the feels in me. I'm fortunate in that my parents worked really hard and could afford to give me a decent upbringing in NYC. Really inspiring and informative movie about one man's journey to discover his roots. (a must watch if you're Chinese and especially if you're of cantonese/toisan descent).

I watched this during a plane ride and I cried for like half the movie. If you're an immigrant, or diasporic Chinese, especially Toisan (台山人), this may make you feel the feels. As a Cantonese kid separated from my culture by several emigrations, languages, and cultures, it was both painful and uplifting to live vicariously through Kenny on his journey to 台山 with his father. Even just hearing them speak was emotional for me. I learned a lot from this film, and I feel a lot less alone now. Watch this if you can.

Particularly relevant for any Chinese American searching for their own identity and history. Thank you for this documentation of the Chinese American experience.
