Philip Sutherland (Gable), a foreign correspondent based in Russia, falls in love with Maria Lamarkina (Tierney), a lovely ballerina. They marry and Maria applies for an exit visa so they can return to the United States together. Months pass and Philip, who has tried every official channel, devises a desperate plan to return to Russia for his bride.
