Philip Sutherland (Gable), a foreign correspondent based in Russia, falls in love with Maria Lamarkina (Tierney), a lovely ballerina. They marry and Maria applies for an exit visa so they can return to the United States together. But Cold War politics intervene and she is detained in Russia by the NKVD while Philip is escorted home. Months pass and Philip, who has tried every official channel, devises a desperate plan to return to Russia for his bride. Political intrigue, fabulous ballet sequences and a timeless love story make this thrilling drama a classic.
