Il regista visionario Guillermo del Toro dà vita a un thriller psicologico in stile noir con Bradley Cooper e Cate Blanchett, ambientato nel tetro mondo delle fiere. Quando il carismatico ma squattrinato Stanton Carlisle (Cooper) entra nelle grazie della chiaroveggente Zeena (Toni Collette) e del marito ed ex mentalista Pete (David Strathairn) a una fiera iterante, sembra aver trovato la via per il successo. Più usa le sue nuove abilità per imbrogliare la ricca élite della New York anni '40, più cresce la sua ambizione. Ben presto, con la virtuosa e leale Molly (Rooney Mara) al suo fianco, Stanton escogita un piano per truffare un pericoloso magnate (Richard Jenkins) con l'aiuto di una misteriosa psichiatra (Blanchett), che potrebbe rivelarsi l'avversaria più temibile. Il cast stellare di LA FIERA DELLE ILLUSIONI include anche Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman e Mary Steenburgen. Del Toro, esperto cantastorie, ha diretto questo thriller ricco di tensione, scritto insieme a Kim Morgan e tratto dal romanzo di William Lindsay Gresham.

Valutazioni e recensioni

Part of the scenery is reminiscent of "American Horror Story" on FX Channel. They had one season all about Carnies/Pop-up Fairs; and I'd be surprised if they didn't use parts from their sets. Regardless, this film has GREED for its theme, alongside gruesome acts to obtain success/wealth. I gave it three stars because the storyline was a bit drab and I couldn't relate/believe with most of the acting; except for Cate Blanchett. Guillermo del Torros makes amazing movies; unfortunately, this wasn't.

It was okay. It really never got into a "horror" element. More of a psychological confidence movie with a touch film noir. The decisions, and respective consequences, were a bit more obvious than I was hoping and the foreshadow scenes ruined the final ending. The acting was good but the director choices turned this into a "just okay" movie

Amazing movie! Very true to the original. Amazing performances and of course direction. Guillermo is in fine form with this dark, tragic tale.
