鬼才ギレルモ・デル・トロ監督によるサスペンスに満ちたノワール・サイコスリラー。ダークなカーニバルの世界を舞台に、ブラッドリー・クーパーとケイト・ブランシェットが主演を務める。カリスマ性があるものの、落ちぶれてカーニバルに行き着いたスタントン・カーライル（クーパー）。彼はそこで出会った読心術師のジーナ（トニ・コレット）と彼女の夫ピート（デヴィッド・ストラザーン）から教えを受け、成功への黄金の切符を手に入れる。スタントンは新たに習得した知識を駆使し、1940年代のニューヨークの裕福なエリートたちから金を騙し取る。金を手にすればするほど、彼の野望は大きくなっていく。スタントンは純粋なモリー（ルーニー・マーラ）を従え、謎めいた心理学博士（ブランシェット）の助けを借り、危険な大物（リチャード・ジェンキンス）を騙そうと画策。しかし助けを借りた彼女こそ、スタントンにとって最も手強い相手なのかもしれない。共演は、ウィレム・デフォー、ロン・パールマン、メアリー・スティーンバージェンのオールスターキャスト。偉大なストーリーテラーであるデル・トロ監督がキム・モーガンと共同で脚本を執筆。ウィリアム・リンゼイ・グレシャムによる小説を緊迫感あふれるスリラーとして映画化した。

評価とレビュー

Part of the scenery is reminiscent of "American Horror Story" on FX Channel. They had one season all about Carnies/Pop-up Fairs; and I'd be surprised if they didn't use parts from their sets. Regardless, this film has GREED for its theme, alongside gruesome acts to obtain success/wealth. I gave it three stars because the storyline was a bit drab and I couldn't relate/believe with most of the acting; except for Cate Blanchett. Guillermo del Torros makes amazing movies; unfortunately, this wasn't.

I down loaded a Google play card for $25.Went to buy this movie and I got an error message.Now I am out $21 and it doesn't even show I bought the movie.Can I get refunded?

It was okay. It really never got into a "horror" element. More of a psychological confidence movie with a touch film noir. The decisions, and respective consequences, were a bit more obvious than I was hoping and the foreshadow scenes ruined the final ending. The acting was good but the director choices turned this into a "just okay" movie
