This is an absolutely terrific film that manages to take one of the most loathed characters of 20th century America and not only render him human, but actually lovable. I can't comment on how true-to-life this film is as I'm no expert on the matter, but Oliver Stone has certainly managed to look past his own liberal leanings to create a complex and likable Nixon. The film, by no means, justifies what Nixon does nor does it downplay his crimes. Instead, it gives you the whole man. Good. Bad. Ugly. All of it. Hopkins does a terrific job as Nixon. I was certainly skeptical of that bit of casting going into the film, but he pulls it off extraordinarily well despite looking very little like the actual man. The cast is terrific all round. Nobody stands out as bad. Oliver Stone's editing and cinematography also shines here. Stone doesn't simply give us a by-the-numbers biographical film, it's a work of art and an attempt to dive deep into the psyche of Nixon and 1960s and 70s America in general. John Williams also provides a terrific score. All said, this was a wonderful film that actually brought tears to my eyes and all for a man I admit I've never felt tenderly about. I highly recommend it.

Suberb study of a very flawed genius who did, in fact, bring America together. The saying was true about, "Only Nixon could go to China!"
