Published in 1987 and since translated into 33 languages, NORWEGIAN WOOD is a story of loss and heartbreak in a time of global instability. Haruki Murakami's bestselling novel is brought to the screen by Tran Anh Hung (Golden Lion winner for CYCLO and Academy Award nominee for "The Scent of Green Papaya") and features Japanese rising star Kenichi Matsuyama and Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi alongside newcomer Kiko Mizuhara. Tokyo, the late 1960s...Students around the world are uniting to overthrow the establishment and Toru Watanabe's personal life is similarly in tumult. At heart, he is deeply devoted to his first love, Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman. But their complex bond has been forged by the tragic death of their best friend years before. I read and loved the book, so naturally when I heard there was a movie I immediately got it. As I watched the movie I noticed that they were immediately covering the first quarter of the book. I thought to myself " wow, I hope this is a summary, because there's some important parts they are skipping." but no, they decided to adjust the story. The characters were portrayed inaccurately and the situations that drove the characters to who they were was lost. I could not relate to anyone in movie to the book, and for a 2 hour film, I'm not sure what I watched; it had no filling. I hated how they ignored simple yet crucial details, such as character's backstories. At no point could I see character development and similarity to the book. It's like the director heard the book from someone that heard it from someone else. Just because they added some lines from the book to some of the scenes doesn't mean it was portrayed correctly. Though the book ended in a slight mystery, the real mystery is why they made this movie if the only accurate thing was the title. If you haven't read the book, please do, it's a wonderful piece of literature.
