Between the sweat, heart-pounding, and emotional turmoil that Number 37 puts you through, Director Nosipho Dumisa demands a lot from her audiences. Dumisa’s mission to engage theatergoers in her narrative rather than just tell it is not only admirable, but is equally well-executed. A balanced blend of broad genre conventions, eerie scoring, and intense acting creates a world that is expansive and immersive, making this film well worth the watch.

After watching Number 37 my perspective on foreign films has changed. I enjoyed many different aspects of this movie but my favorite was definitely the music played throughout this film. Music is something that any person, no matter race, culture, ethnicity, can understand and relate to in different ways. I think the music used helped me connect to the intensity and the suspense that was being poured out during the film and I believe most people would agree with this statement. I think inclusitivioty is super important when creating a film, and I think Darkness Visible did just that, and because of this I highly recommend it.

Number 37 was super good! The best thing about it is that it has a really good balancing of suspense and drama. Sometimes either one of those can be way too much and make a movie feel really slow or too intense, but thankfully that’s not the case here! Also, it was able to hold my attention from start to finish (something that I find is increasingly more difficult to do). All in all, great movie and a joy to watch, definitely recommend.
