The Guy works part-time repairing vacuum cleaners and dreams of one day landing a big record deal. While busking on the street, he meets the Girl, a struggling single mother who can't afford the piano she dreams of. Finding a common bond through their passion for music, Guy and Girl are brought together over a few intense days. This is a tough film to review. On the one hand it is a truly profound story, which manages to be simultaneously grounded in reality and utterly magical, a rare combination largely owing to the exquisite music and vulnerable performances. On the other hand, the resolution does not do justice to the rest of the story: it is a dream that is way too small for these heroic characters.

This movie has so much soul and the story is simply magic. The music haunts you and touches your heart, it's unpretentious and miles better than the average romantic film. "Once" is one of my all time favorites.

Just the most beautiful movie I've watched in a long time. Can't believe I haven't seen it before - I guess it's one of those hidden gems you find and then have to keep forever.
