In this hilarious romantic comedy, Molly Mahoney (Aubrey Dollar) is flying home to Chicago for her mom's wedding and tells her family she is bringing a "Mystery Man." When she discovers her Mystery Man has a Mystery Wife, she dumps him curbside. In shock, she runs into childhood friend Josh Shiffman (Shane McRae) who is flying to the same event. Molly cries until she falls asleep. While she is passed out, Josh gets a call from his parents and finds out his father, Max (Daniel J. Travanti) is dying and his only regret is he will never meet the woman his son will marry. Desperate to fulfill his dad's final wish, Josh says he has met that woman, close family friend Molly Mahoney! Josh convinces a reluctant Molly to play fiancée for a few days. As the lie grows, the two boisterous families begin to plan what is really a phony wedding and somewhere in the chaos Molly and Josh may actually be falling for each other.

Disclaimer: Every negative review from professionals is substantially accurate. I typically hate rom-coms period -- particularly where a fanfic-level rewrite could remove a plethora of cliches, fixed the myriad plot holes with throw-away lines and gags, and then unwound the surfeit of plot contrivances; all of which would immensely help the plausibility of the set-up, give the backstory more depth, and clarify the motivations of the female protagonist. I love _One Small Hitch_. Since I discovered the film last month, the DVD case has already shown a few years' worth of usage. Why? The production staff and performers clearly liked the film and had a lot of fun making it -- their enjoyment just oozes from the screen. And because the writers, producers, and director smartly gave most of the characters at least two places to shine, the performers infused them with depth that the script may not have had. Some may not like it because most of them come from theatre and may seem OTT, but it all felt fine to me. Even so, the three actors on whom this movie depends need special mention. Daniel J. Travanti ("Max Shiffman") raises his character from MacGuffin to be part of the heart-and-soul of the film. He's great in this but you already knew that even if you haven't seen it. You may not expect the excellent performance from Shane McRae ("Joshua Shiffman"). He and the director intelligently downplay most of Josh's sleaziness. They also play-up his better nature and emphasise that more as the movie goes on. But the movie strikes paydirt with Aubrey Dollar ("Molly Mahoney"), who is flat-out scintillating. Her interactions with McRae and Rebecca Spence ("Carla Mahoney") as her sister-in-law are particularly excellent. Her performance at the bridal shower was her pinnacle: Molly knows she's fallen hard, but frowns slightly when she can't reconcile her feelings with the ersatz engagement and Josh's antics. I smile every time I watch the film. What more can I ask for?

Wonderful comedy love story with a happy ending. So many have sad or unhappy endings. This was delightful...
