Eine der herzlichsten Coming Out Komödien der vergangenen Jahre. „Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!“ führt uns in den herrlich verkorksten Hirsch Clan ein. Mutter Shirley liebt ihren Sohn Nelson so, wie es nur eine jüdische Mutter kann - mit viel Liebe und Ungeduld, was das Liebesleben ihres Sprösslings angeht. Wo bleibt die Braut? Die Enkel? Nelson aber lebt mit dem Latino Angelo zusammen und hat mächtig die Hosen voll vor dem Outing bei seinen Eltern. Nach einer Verwechslung glauben Shirley und Vater Martin, ihr Sohn dated ein Playboy Playmate - was zu noch mehr komödiantischem Chaos führt... Doch dann fasst Nelson sich ein Herz und stellt endlich seinen Latin Lover vor. Das stürzt die armen Eltern in ein Wechselbad der Gefühle - sind am Ende sie selbst schuld? Ist Nelson nicht doch noch zu retten? Alle Beteiligten werden nun von einem kunterbunten Ereignis-Tornado mitgerissen, der nichts auslässt, was New York zu bieten hat: Die Mafia, eine Adoption und am Ende steht die ganze Stadt Kopf.

Yes, like Luke Y. Thompson wrote in his review of Oy Vey! My Son is Gay! that nowadays, a gay couple adopting a child won't cause mass protests on the streets of New York. True. Nonetheless, the movie plays in a time where it still was something new. But this is just one aspect of the movie. Much more than that, most stereotypes still are very true up until the present day. Jewish family values still are lived out very much like displayed in the movie. And sure, Shirley is totally over the top but the movie lives from her hysteric overreacting on anything and everything und she really portraits very very good the role of a typical rich Jewish mother. I also love the portraits of both fathers who obviously have a hard time with their boys being gay but find a way to deal with it, too. I had the greatest of times watching this movie!
