Low budget intrigue and thoughtful sci-fi. Very similar to Michael Crichton's "Andromeda Strain" in the threat of total human annihilation, yet the substance is thoroughly unique. Acting leaves something to be desired. Story is captivating - an "alien" presence has changed/evolved common ants so they can think at higher levels than humans. Under the guise of study two scientists become frighteningly aware of the imminent threat these super-intelligent ants pose to them & all life on Earth.

Directed by Saul Bass, yup, Legendary graphic designer and movie title creating master makes a full length feature film. That should warrant a rental alone. Plenty of missteps (bad dialogue, hoaky science), but so many strong memorable moments. Smart villians. Amazing editing. Beautifully conceived shots with microphotography and large set designs. An unforgettable film. Find the original/alternate footage meant for the ending if you can.
Early Black
This is one of my favorite films of all time. For its originality uniqueness visual style and visceral creepy atmosphere. But most of all just for its weirdness. It's a unique cult classic in an age of remakes reboots and fluffed up over hyped franchises. Phase IV is the dope if you need a fix of originality. Dig it.
