“Ready Player One” is een sciencefiction-actie-avonturenfilm van Steven Spielberg, gebaseerd op de bestseller met dezelfde naam van Ernest Cline. De film speelt zich af in 2045. De wereld is in chaos en de ondergang is nabij. Maar de mensen zoeken hun redding in de OASIS, een duur virtueel universum, gecreëerd door de briljante en excentrieke James Halliday (Mark Rylance). Wanneer Halliday sterft, schenkt hij zijn enorme fortuin aan de eerste persoon die het digitale paasei weet te vinden dat hij ergens in de OASIS heeft verstopt. Hierdoor begint een wereldwijde strijd. Wanneer een jonge held met de naam Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) besluit aan de wedstrijd deel te nemen, komt hij terecht in een halsbrekende, realiteit verbuigende jacht op de schat in een fantasiewereld vol mysterie, ontdekking en gevaar.

Beoordelingen en reviews

I loved the book, so I went to watch RPO in theaters at the release. I never expect the movie to be as good as the book, but this movie just screws up in all the worst ways. The fact that a few people fell asleep midway through says it all. The most significant parts of the story are left out, while all the scenes with action are kept in without much context. Almost every story element is out of order and the character depictions poorly resemble the original book versions. Just a disappointment.

This is actually a lot of fun. I don't know if it will hold up over time as reference movies are becoming a genre, but in my opinion this was a lot of fun. The references felt genuine in context with the game and the movie still holds up without needing to rely on it. If I hadn't seen Space Jam 2, Rescue Rangers, and many others since I'd probably give this a 4.

I loved the book so much and hated the changes in the film. Understanding that there was a need to cut time down to tell the story, I just thought it took too many freedoms to do so while sharing a different telling of the story. That said, I'd watch it again and maybe grow to enjoy it for the cinematics but do yourself a favor and read the book. Or listen to it with Will Wheaton who did a phenomenal job!
